Renaissance Faire Service Learning Project

On Saturday, a group of seven LSCC students participated in a Service Learning Project at the Lady of the Lakes Renaissance Faire held at Hickory Point Park in Tavares.  The students, clad in Renaissance Period clothing, surveyed patrons to assist the Lake County Economic Development and Tourism department with estimating economic impact of the Faire.

This project presented a wonderful opportunity for students to apply some of the concepts discussed in the Elementary Statistics course.  Although only a few students participated in the event, all of the students in my statistics sections this fall will hopefully benefit from the discussion of this project as we worked through issues like, “How many people should be surveyed?” and “What questions need to be asked?”

The seven students who did an extraordinary job of surveying the patrons are:

From South Lake:
Abigail Bueno, Frank Gutierrez, Kayla LaRosa and Covyn Montemayor

From Leesburg:
Alexandrina Ande, Heather Perkins and Yolanda Rosado

In addition, many colleagues provided enormous support and at the risk of leaving someone out, I would like to recognize them for their valuable assistance.  They are: Greg Cumbaa, Debra Dabney, Karen Hogans, Les Hurley, Marion Kane, Linda Karp, Kim Kidd, Cindy Lackey, Glenda Libby and Debra Stoffel. Karen and Les attended the Faire on Saturday as an additional point of contact for the students.
