General Questions 

  • What services does Career Development Services (CDS) provide?
    We assist LSSC students and alumni with career/major decision-making, job/ internship search and continuing education needs. Click here to find out more about our services.
  • Who is eligible to use the services provided by CDS? 
    LSSC students currently enrolled in for-credit courses and alumni who have earned a degree or certificate from LSSC. For more information on our levels of service by population, please visit our About Us section.  
  • I’m a prospective student considering attending LSSC within the next semester or two and would like some assistance in deciding a major or career, can CDS help?
    Absolutely! We provide prospective students (1) in-person career/major exploration advisement session to help you explore LSSC majors and possible career options.   
  • I've never been to CDS, how can I find your office and what are the hours of operation?
    Click here for CDS hours and locations. Our main office is located at the Leesburg Campus, SS-144. However, we also serve the South Lake Campus on Thursdays in Bldg. 2, Rm. 168 (across from the Security Booth) and we serve the Sumter Campus by appointment only. We are also able to schedule to meet with you via phone or video conference.
  • How do I schedule an appointment to meet with a Career Advisor?
    It's easy! To schedule an appointment, stop by our main office located at the Leesburg Campus (SS-144), call us at (352) 323-3603 or submit an appointment request online. To help your Career Advisor prepare for your visit, we will generally ask your major, and what assistance you need (e.g., help with making a career decision, a critique of your resume, general job-search assistance, assistance with transferring to a college, mock interview etc.) as well as your contact information.
  • How long are appointments?
    Appointments are usually scheduled for either 30 or 60 minutes depending on the type of assistance you need.
  • What should I do if I have to cancel my appointment?
    We ask that you please contact our office as soon as you know you will not be able to make your appointment to open up that time slot for other students. To cancel or reschedule an appointment, contact us at (352) 323-3603 careers@lssc.edu. 

Career/Major Exploration

  • I don’t know what I want to do in terms of a career or major. Can you help me?
    Yes! In fact, CDS is a great place for undecided students to start when trying to decide on a major or career. It’s also a great resource for those trying to connect their major to a career or learn more about a specific career. When you meet with a Career Advisor, you’ll be able to discuss your options and explore major and career options that best fit you. 
  • Are there tests I can take to help me decide on a major?
    Yes. CDS offers MyPlan's career guidance system which includes career assessments that provide you career recommendations based on your personality, interests, skills and values. LSSC students and alumni have free access to My Plan's career assessments by following the following instructions. Although these can be accessed from home, we strongly recommend that you schedule an appointment to meet with a Career Advisor for assistance in interpreting your assessment results to further explore careers and majors and develop a career and educational plan.
  • I already know what career I want to go into. Where can I go to learn more about it, such as the educational requirements, expected salary, projected growth, sample job titles, challenges and opportunities, etc.?
    There are a variety of resources available offering career profiles. Two of our favorite ones are MyPlan and the Occupational Outlook Handbook. To access those, visit the “Explore Academic and Career Options” section of the “Career/Majors Explorer” section of our website.
  • How can I find out what fields and industries connect with my major? 
    Review the “What Can I Do with This Major?” resources located on the CDS website for ideas.

University Transfer, Professional & Graduate School

  • ​I’d like to transfer to continue my education after LSSC. Where can I go to find out what schools offer the major I’m interested in?
    You can find resources for doing research on colleges and universities that offer bachelors, graduate and professional programs on the University Transfer Research​ section of our website.

Job Search and On-Campus Recruitment

  • How can CDS help me find off-campus employment opportunities?
    We recommend that you meet with a Career Advisor for assistance in creating a personalized job search. Our Career Advisors can assist you create a resume, research local companies, help you connect your major to employment opportunities, prepare for interviews and more. The following services are available to LSSC students and alumni to help you connect with employers and employment opportunities.
​​​​Online Job Listings- College Central Network is the official online recruitment portal for LSSC. All current LSSC students are pre-registered into the system. Instructions for first-time log-in can be found here.  
Resume Referral System- Post your resume on College Central Network so potential employers can find you when looking for potential job candidates. This service is available only to enrolled students and registered alumni. You must register on College Central Network do this. Please note that not all employers use this feature and job seekers should rely primarily on conducting active job searches in order to obtain the greatest number of employment leads.  
On-Campus Recruitment Tables-Employers hold information tables throughout the academic year. These visits provide students the opportunity to meet with companies who are actively recruiting LSSC students. In many instances, companies will collect resumes or applications during these visits. On-Campus Recruitment visits are announced on the Career Events section of our webpage as well as College Central Network announcements section.
On-Campus Interviews- Employers visit LSSC to interview students from a variety of majors. Participation in on-campus programs is coordinated through College Central Network and protected by user names and passwords. Job listings that are part of on-campus interview efforts will include instructions for applying and how to sign-up for an interview, if selected.
  • I don’t have a resume and need one. Where do you recommend I get started?
    Although not all jobs require a resume, the majority will. The best way to stand out from the competition is to have a well-written resume that highlights your skills, experiences and achievements as they relate to the position you are applying to. To view sample resumes and learn how to write an effective resume, visit the “Resume” section of our website. College Central Network offers students and alumni access to a Resume Builder that provides assistance in the formatting and content layout of a resume. 
  • Do I need a cover letter when applying to jobs?
    A cover letter is only submitted when it is requested. When requested, be sure to customize your cover letter to the position you are applying for. To learn more about writing cover letters, visit our website.
  • I would like to have a Career Advisor review my resume and/or cover letter. How can I go about doing that? 
    There are two ways to have your resume and/or cover letter critiqued by a Career Advisor: 
    ​You may schedule an appointment to have a Career Advisor to go over your job search documents in person or you may request an online resume and/or cover letter critique by completing our "Resume/Cover Letter Critique Request Form" and attaching your document in Word or Text format. Please allow 1-2 business days for a review to be returned to you via email. 
  • I’d like to practice interviewing before my interview with an employer. How do I sign up for a mock interview?
    It’s a great idea to prepare prior to your first or next interview by scheduling a mock interview appointment. To do so stop by our main office located at the Leesburg Campus (SS-144), call us at (352) 323-3603 or submit an appointment request online. We ask that you dress professionally and bring a copy of your resume to the interview. For additional tips on preparing for a mock interview, visit the "Mock Interview" section of our webpage.
  • I was selected for an on-campus interview with an employer. Should I skip class to attend?
    No. We strongly encourage students to schedule interviews outside of class times. CDS cannot grant permission nor excuse an absence from class. When there is a time conflict, it is up to students to make arrangements to seek permission from professors/instructors in advance of the interview.
  • What should I do if I can't make it to my scheduled on-campus interview? 
    Students or alumni participating in on-campus interviewing are required to contact the employer or CDS (careers@lssc.edu) via phone or email at least 24 hours prior to your scheduled interview. Students or alumni who do not show to an interview and do not notify the employer or CDS will be asked to write an apology letter to the employer before access to on-campus interviewing will be re-instated. 

Registering with CDS

  • Why should I register with CDS?
    Registering with CDS allows you to view job/internship postings available in College Central Network as well as interview on-campus with employers who visit LSSC. You will also have the option to be included in our online Student Resume Book that we make available to prospective employers. 
  • How do I register with CDS?
    Activate your College Central Network account. It is to your advantage to register as early as possible in the school year. Be sure to upload a resume if you wish to make your resume visible to employers who are recruiting LSSC students and alumni.
