Robin Le Roy-Kyle
Welcome to my home page! My name is Robin Le Roy-Kyle and I'm a faculty member at Lake-Sumter Community College. Information on the courses I teach, along with my contact information and office hours, is included below.
I'm an adjunct instructor, and teach EPI 0010, Foundations of Research-based Practices in Reading (Educator Preparation Institute). I'm new to LSSC as of Spring 2013, but have been an educator for 18+ years, working in K-14.
When not working with future educators, you can find me working with high school students in Orange County, currently serving as an Intensive Reading teacher. I returned to the high school classroom full-time in September 2011, after six years in a district role. I really missed the daily interactions with teenagers and their unique perspective on life. :-) I've served in instructional and literacy coaching roles in Broward and Brevard Counties, as well as my current teaching position in Orange County, Florida.
Like many high school kids, I planned to go to college after graduation, but life had other plans for me. Instead, I joined the Navy shortly after graduation, completed boot camp in Orlando, and was shipped to San Diego, serving for four years while attending junior college in the evenings. I later earned a B.A. in Social Science, and applied for a temporary teaching certificate.
Eleven years in middle school classrooms led to developing curriculum out of necessity while watching older students struggle with literacy. I asked LOTS of questions - of my peers, research experts, and of students themselves.
With my own questions about the complexities of reading comprehension, I decided to pursue a master's in Reading Education, to better understand why understanding what we read is difficult for many people (children and adults alike), and how we as educators, can increase students' reading comprehension. My focus: the effects of student engagement and teacher efficacy on reading comprehension.
I earned a master's in Reading Education from Nova Southeastern in 2007, with many answers, and lots of new questions! A short time later, I joined Valencia College to teach Reading II and EPI 0010 in the evening, while supporting fellow teachers during the day in a literacy coaching role.
When not teaching, I enjoy writing in various venues, landscaping, searching for treasures at flea markets and thrift shops, and traveling with my terrific husband. We are parents to a fish who truly believes he's a dog!
Office Hours/Contact: I teach fully online and don't have an office on campus, but can be reached at: LeRoyKyR@lssc.edu. I can also be reached at Robin.LeRoy-Kyle@ocps.net.
As a lifelong learner, I'm excited (and overwhelmed?) at how much technology has evolved, can't imagine NOT having it, and feel it's an important part of 21st century learning (and teaching). In my personal and professional worlds, I utilize it daily - to expand professional knowledge, answer my never-ending questions about everything, communicate, and explore creative ideas. How does technology fit into your world?
