Module 5: Citing Information
Quoting and Paraphrasing
As you write, it is important to distinguish between your own thoughts and ideas and those of others. You may quote or paraphrase ideas that are not your own.
Quoting
- Using text word for word from a source (enclosed in quotes)
- Used in limited amounts for emphasis
- Requires credit to the author/creator
Paraphrasing
- Reading and comprehending an idea from a source and re-writing it in your own words (NOT enclosed in quotes)
- Usually shorter than the original passage of text being used
- Requires credit to the author/creator
Quotes and paraphrased material need an in-text citation so that the reader knows how you used your supporting information and where you originally found it. The following 5 min. video will show you how to create in-text citations. A text script is available.
