To make finding sources easier, libraries organize information sources in several ways:
  • by format - online or physical collections
  • by type of source - physical information sources in libraries are often organized into separate collections of books, periodicals, government documents, reference books, leisure reading books
  • physical collections are usually organized by subject - literature, computer science, history, criminal justice
  • classification systems are used to organize physical collections by subject
At the end of this module you will be able to:
  • Understand how libraries organize information sources
  • Understand how to locate information in libraries using classification systems
  • Locate information from online catalogs and databases
